The Benefits of Reading
Even before I decided to become an author I noticed that the world is divided into those who love to read and those who don’t. I’ve been trying to understand why. I wanted to read soon after I was talking. Fortunately, when I was little, television had minimal programming and held little interest for my parents. They loved reading and reading to me. Our home was filled with books. If I had my way I would not have played outdoors. I would spend every free moment reading. I kept a flashlight by my bed and would read under the covers. There were times my parents insisted I engage in activities outdoors. Years later they discovered the reason I stopped arguing with them about playing outside was because I stashed books in a hiding place so I could continue reading outdoors.
Reading helped develop my imagination while transporting me to other times and places. It stimulated my desire to learn more about the places my mind ventured to which led me to enjoy reading non-fiction. Each book is a learning experience and I’ve become a life long reader. I’ve learned there are many benefits to reading including possibly helping prevent Alzheimer’s, increasing your vocabulary, improving your career, and several others as outlined in “10 Scientific Facts About Reading Books And How Could It Really Improve Your Life” (click on link to read).
